The course on environment and society will introduce the students to the sociological and social science literature dealing with environmental issues in contemporary, modern-industrial societies. 

The object of study for environmental social sciences will be defined as the interaction between societies and their environments or sustenance base, to be studied in a socio-historical perspective. Students will be made aware of the fact environmental problems can be approached in different ways, using different theoretical perspectives. It also will be shown that there is not one univocal or uniform (scientifically correct) way of defining environmental problems. There are several definitions available, both in the natural and social sciences. Against this background the course will provide a working definition of environmental degradation which combines social and eco/biological knowledge in such a way that a clear distinction is made between the different dynamics of ecosystems and social systems. Special attention will be given to the role of human perceptions for defining environmental problems or risks.
